"To promote, sustain and disseminate the work of traditional Mexican music artists who are at a disadvantage."

CaminArt and the collective Tochtli perform a series of videos and recordings to promote and disseminate on the network the work of traditional Mexican music artists who are at a disadvantage both socially and economically and who have had to resort to playing in the Street to offer its artistic services. The goal is to encourage new generations of traditional musicians and recover the intangible heritage of our musical culture.

Goals:

  • To integrate into the alternative cultural circuits and diffusion networks created by our Association to musical groups, artists and traditional musicians of rural localities, who do not have access to means to divulge their work.
  • Safeguard the musical work of these artists as a way of preserving the intangible cultural heritage of their region.
  • Provide them access to training in new communication technologies so that they can exercise their cultural rights, such as exhibition, dissemination, knowledge and attraction
  • Create a digital library with open access from the compilation of traditional music, created or executed by these artists

Strategies:

We decided collectively to use new communication technologies, which are currently indispensable in the culture industry, to present, disseminate and safeguard the artistic work of musicians who seek their lives by playing the traditional music of their region.

As a pilot experience of the project, we made a series of video recordings and interviews, with artists who interpret or compose traditional Mexican music and who are at a disadvantage both socially and economically, for which they have had to resort to playing in the street to Offer their artistic services.

These works were disseminated on the web through our website, a blog, on social networks, and on YouTube.

Results:

With this initiative, CaminArt has supported artists who seek to spread the music of their region, promote the appreciation of local artistic expressions and awaken the interest of the new generations to continue and preserve our cultural heritage.

We have recorded three artistic groups and a soloist from Alvarado and Tlacotalpan in Veracruz, from the Costa Grande and Tierra Caliente in Guerrero and from Morelia, Michoacán. One of our videos has accumulated more than 65,000 hits on YouTube in a year and everyone has remained active. It should be noted that among the comments received there are thanks and congratulations from those who have found, through our videos, emblematic characters of their communities, which had never been recorded.

The videos, recordings and interviews we present promote these teachers of the tradition who are in a situation of exclusion, put up with the arduous and hard work they develop to keep alive the different traditions of our country and develop an artistic network of cultural solidarity For the dissemination and preservation of the richness provided by cultural diversity.

On the other hand they motivate the new generations to conserve their traditions, creating contact between old and young, reinforcing the feeling of belonging and identity.

It is important to emphasize that with their participation they are already exercising the right to express themselves culturally and to be heard. In using the new technologies, this pilot project has demonstrated its communicative potential for the promotion of these artists that are bastions of our intangible cultural heritage.

This series of compilations is intended to leave a memory of the artists who earn their living doing the traditional music of their region.

Much of the traditional Mexican music is currently being lost along with the school of traditional knowledge and the richness and pluriculturality of our country.

The project of the association and the artistic collective Tochtli aims to give "Promoting diffusion and support to our traditions", because for us it is an important part of the cultural heritage of humanity.

This project developed support groups for art events, various artists and creators of cultural events linked to tradition

Artists of traditional music are disappearing and usually have problems to continue the knowledge of their traditions and develop the interest of the new generations due to the lack of means to promote their artistic work.

The videos we present seek to promote these artists who have been disdained by our institutions and media and seeks to put up the arduous and hard work they develop to keep alive the different traditions of our country.

This project aims to promote videos, recordings and interviews with these masters of the tradition, as well as develop an artistic network of cultural solidarity and generate the means and knowledge to promote and present their artistic work and motivate the new generations to follow, develop and Improve their traditions.
